For about the same cost which is better?
1. across the street from the ocean, .75 acres, we build a new house about 15 minutes south of Newport.
2. across the street from the Siletz River, more than 2 acres (including down to the river), bigger house, but 30 years old, barn, about 20 minutes east of Newport.
We are pretty seriously chewing over our options here as we know that we won't be staying in our current rental house forever. It feels like most of the houses in Newport are overpriced and run down. We spent a morning looking in Toledo, thinking that 15 minutes east of the beach would give more bang for your buck. All we saw was more run down for practically the same price.

That is a tough one. It depends on if you WANT to build a house. There are a lot of advantages to that, like having the exact house you want. Also disadvantages like it takes some time and generally creates a lot of stress.
The key is that it really doesn't matter what you choose, where ever you all are, being together IS HOME.
So the house in the country was a total bust. WAY too old and it was listed as three bedroom when it is really two. The master is a loft and the second bedroom is like a closet. On top of being 23 minutes away, which felt longer than I anticipated. Sigh.
